Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Developer to lead Happy Medium’s agile, growing and award-winning development team in creating and improve client websites and website applications. You will be the point of contact for anything and everything related to the web or technical side of Happy Medium’s output. We are looking someone who wants to develop the future by working for a dynamic company that believes in compelling work on the cutting edge of web marketing. The Senior Developer is someone who wants to creatively use all the tools the web has to offer to develop solutions for our clients and who can teach the Happy Medium development team to do the same. This is a person who is proactive with technical issues, a role model among the team and a damn fine developer in their own right. The Senior Developer is willing to grow, able to help the team do the same and gets excited at the prospect of new work every day.

Position Summary

As a senior web developer at Happy Medium, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Providing technical guidance for your team
  • Designing and coding superior technical solutions for Happy Medium’s web projects
  • Recognizing system inefficiencies and implementing effective solutions
  • Showing aptitude and desire for owning responsibility of technical decisions for multiple projects
  • Coordinating with the design team to create low-fidelity and high-fidelity in-browser mockups of websites
  • Creating and executing project work plans depending on changing needs and requirements
  • Applying knowledge of industry trends and developments as well as natural curiosity to improve service to Happy Medium’s clients while enforcing coding standards
  • Experience using Git in project workflows
  • Creatively managing the troubleshooting of post-launch bugs or malfunctions as well as proactively suggesting updates
  • Generating team enthusiasm
  • Iterating quickly on HTML prototypes to bring a client’s website to life
  • Integrating HTML prototypes into a user-friendly WordPress site
  • Coordinating the writing of thorough documentation for clients to use and update their websites
  • Updating and entering content into new and existing websites

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Strong understanding of modern front-end web development techniques including responsive design and website performance
  • Strong experience with WordPress development
  • Experience using CSS preprocessors like Sass or LESS and task runners like Grunt or Gulp
  • Knowledge of modern JavaScript practices
  • Knowledge of SEO/SEM and its impact on web design
  • Significant knowledge of client server and internet systems architectures
  • Strong technical communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience being a self-starter and a motivated learner
  • Experience with Git
  • Experience writing about technical issues

We’re looking to hire a candidate living in or near Des Moines, Iowa for this position. Remote locations for this position are possible within driving distance, such as  St. Louis, Chicago, Kansas City and Omaha. A remote candidate would be required to travel to the office at least once a month. Other travel required for the position will be minimal to none (client location dependent).
